Instructors

Vanguard Martial Arts is headed up by Mr Ian Fear - a 2nd degree black belt, who has been involved in Taekwon-Do for over 10 years as both a student and instructor. He has a vast and comprehensive knowledge of Taekwon-Do, martial arts and self defence. Whilst we are all here to learn the art it is also imperitive to learn how it can be applied to everyday life. Restraint, respect and awareness can help avoid situations but in the unfortunate event you find yourself in a confrontation you will benefit from Mr Fear's experience of self defence.

Classes are held at Itchen Sports College and Whiteley Community Centre along with the help of fellow black belts and senior students.

Your First Lesson

The very first lesson can be daunting for some. I can still remember my first lesson. It was a mixed age class up to Blue belt. I was the only adult in the back row and there were only 3 in the whole class, the rest of the class were children. As an adult I understood that all of these students had had their own first lesson at some point in the past and fully understood what it's like to start a martial art. My only advice is, accept that you're a beginner and try to remember you are at the start of an exciting and rewarding journey towards becoming a Black Belt.
  • What should I wear?

You will need to wear loose clothing, T-shirt, jogging bottoms, shorts etc. We train in bare feet.

  • What do I need to bring with me?

The only thing that you will need is water to drink, which is recommended for all students. If you have any medical requirements please inform the Instructor.

  • Do I need to pay or sign anything?

The first two lessons are completely free. You will need to complete and sign a licence application form before you start training. You do not need to purchase a licence unless you decide to stay training after your trial period.

  • What will I do on my first lesson?

This will vary. Most of the martial arts training is copying and repetition - one of the most efficient ways that a human learns. You will always perform a warm-up at the start of each class and for the first few sessions just follow on as best you can. During the class you may be assigned to a senior to run you through Taekwon-Do techniques and exercises.

Mini Martial Arts

The Mini Martial Arts programme is a revolutionary new way of teaching 4-6 year olds, using martial arts as a training platform. It has been designed to stimulate and engage the children, helping them to learn whilst having FUN! In today's lifestyle children generally spend a lot of time being sedentary – watching television and playing computer games is fine in small amounts, but research has shown that when children excercise it has a significant benefit to their health later in life. Our classes encourage the children to get fit, through races, games and activities. They particularly like to race the instructors – and they usually win! We use the principles of Respect, Discipline, Courtesy and Confidence to teach important life skills through a theme based syllabus.
